How to do it

  1. 1Load the bar with one large plate per side, add any extra weight with smaller plates inside it, and stand with the bar over your mid-foot.
  2. 2Push your hips back and bend your knees until you can reach the plates, then pinch the outer rim of each plate with your fingers and thumb.
  3. 3Brace your stomach, pull your shoulders down and set a flat back before the bar leaves the floor.
  4. 4Drive your feet into the floor and stand up by straightening your hips and knees together, keeping the bar close to your legs.
  5. 5Lower the weight by pushing your hips back first, set it down under control and reset your grip before the next rep.
