How to do it

  1. 1Put on your skates with a helmet and wrist, elbow and knee guards, and start on a smooth, flat surface away from traffic.
  2. 2Stand with your feet about hip-width apart, knees bent and weight over the balls of your feet, leaning slightly forward.
  3. 3Push one skate out to the side and a little back, then bring it back under you while you glide on the other foot.
  4. 4Swing your arms in time with your strides and keep your knees soft to absorb bumps.
  5. 5Slow down with the heel brake or a controlled turn, and finish with a few minutes of easy gliding to cool down.
